Adventuring is all about searching to find what makes your soul happy, what makes you feel alive. Each spot along the San Mateo Coast has special features you can't find anywhere else. Like this secluded cove you can explore after you drive through the tunnel on Highway One, just north of Montara Beach. To find this cove, you must keep your eyes open, as you can pass it very quickly. As the cliffs drop abruptly into the Pacific Ocean, park in the lot at the base of McNee Ranch and prepare to face the busy highway. Although dangerous, cars often stop for surfers, sun bathers and adventures alike to cross and enter the steep trail sheltered by tall trees.
As you trek down the wild flower decorated trail, you can not miss the glistening waves through the trees as the sun warms your skin. Often times, Gray Whales are spotted close to the shore, another reason why this cove is so special. The pieces of ocean driftwood, small, cream colored seashells and dark green and red seaside plants line the sand with the natural features we all expect to find at a Northern California beach. As the end of summer comes to a close, here are some captured moments from a flawless day spent here. If you're planning a full day at the beach, packing a lunch is ideal as you enjoy time in the sand at Gray Whale Cove State Beach.
