When the opportunity arose to escape the city and head into the mountains there was no way I could pass it up. This past weekend I inhaled that mountain air only found deep within the forest and embraced the not so cold winter chill of the Sierra Mountains. The sun was shining, the trees seemed to stretch miles into the big open sky, and the crystal-clear evenings made for perfect stargazing. The cabin we rented was everything you would want it to be and more with a cozy fire stove paired with a contrasting Indians versus Cowboys theme. On Saturday morning we woke up and drove deeper into the Sierra Mountains to hit the slopes and snowboard at Bear Valley. An unfortunate fall due to unpredictable and icy conditions lead me to the emergency room and left me with a broken wrist that is predicted to take eight weeks to fully heal. With the help of everyone on the trip, I was able to make it that back to the cabin that afternoon to finish off the weekend enjoying each others company, good music, games and a few yummy family style meals.
Despite the terrible pain that I was (and currently am) in due to the injury, I still had to a capture a few small moments of my cabin getaway and the surrounding area. Although the weekend did not go as planned, there is always beauty to be found in all situations. In this particular case I was forced to photograph using only my left hand and although it was not easy (including a more than usual amount of blurry photos in the outtakes) I must embrace it for the next month and a half. I will keep up with blog posts as much as I can within this time, but it will certainly be a time consuming challenge I'm ready to take on. One tool I am taking advantage of on my iMac is the diction function. I have been able to create the text in this blog post by speaking to my computer and it translates my spoken word into text...pretty cool huh? Where was this ability when we were growing up in grade school and injuries were more common?! Despite my injury that ultimately ended any chance of spring snowboarding, I had a peaceful and enjoyable time among the wilderness and simplify in Gold Country on this weekend escape and I can't wait to return again to capture more of its beauty.
